Zakat, worked out on your phone
Enter today’s price of gold and silver, what you own and what you owe. Khalis weighs the total against the nisab and shows the 2.5% that is due. The figures are kept on your phone, and in any backup file you save. They aren’t synced to iCloud.

- Nisab
A guide to the sums, not a ruling. Zakat is due on wealth above the nisab that you have held for one lunar year. Scholars differ on personal jewellery, pensions and long-term debts. The calculator counts whatever you enter, so ask a scholar you trust what belongs in it for you.
Five steps, and an example
The arithmetic is short. Here it is in the order the app does it, with made-up prices so the numbers stay round.
- Cash and bank
- £3,000.00
- Gold
- 40 g of 18 carat counts as 30 g of 24 carat, at £100 a gram
- £3,000.00
- Shares and investments
- £1,500.00
- Money owed to you
- £500.00
- Debts due now
- −£1,000.00
- Zakatable wealth
- £7,000.00
- Nisab on silver
- 595 g at £1 a gram. £7,000.00 is above it.
- £595.00
2.5% of £7,000.00. With the nisab on gold instead, 85 g at £100 a gram is £8,500.00: the same £7,000.00 is below it, so no Zakat is due. The choice of metal can decide whether Zakat is due at all.
What you own stays with you
Money is private. The calculator keeps your figures on the phone and leaves them out of iCloud sync.
- Worked out
On the phone, from the amounts you enter.
- Kept
On the phone, so your figures are still there the next time you open the calculator.
- Prices
Not looked up. Khalis doesn’t go online for gold or silver prices; you type in today’s.
- iCloud
Not synced. With iCloud sync turned on, the iPhone app keeps your prayer record, bookmarks and settings the same on your iPhone and iPad. Zakat figures stay on each device.
- Backups
Included, if you save a backup file. You choose where the file goes. On Android, the phone’s own backup to your Google account can include them too, if you have turned it on. More on backups

Saves nothing and sends nothing. The calculator above runs in your browser and forgets everything when you close the tab.
The finer points
Why 85 g and 595 g, and not 87.48 g and 612.36 g?
Khalis uses 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver. Scholars and Zakat bodies differ here: others use 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver. If you follow those, your nisab is about 3% higher than the one Khalis shows; the app has no setting to change the weights.
Does it keep track of the lunar year?
No. It works from the amounts you enter, as they are now. Keeping track of the lunar year is up to you.
