Khalis

Where everything comes from

Khalis is free, with no ads, no tracking and no account. It is built on the generous work of others, credited here with the terms each is used under. Where Khalis has changed something, it says what.

  • 6,236verses from Tanzil
  • 6reciters, named below
  • 86hadiths from HadeethEnc
  • 12credits in the app’s own list

The same list is in the app, under Settings › Sources and credits. This page gives a little more of each: what Khalis uses it for, the licence, and any change made to it.

The Quran

The text, and what sits around it

The Arabic and its English, the commentary, the tajweed colours and the look-alike verses all come with the app, so they open without a connection.

  • Quran text

Tanzil Project, Uthmani text, version 1.1 · tanzil.net

The Arabic of all 114 surahs, 6,236 verses, in the Uthmani script. The 30 juz follow the standard Madani division, as Tanzil publishes it.

    Changes
None. Tanzil allows verbatim copies only, so the text is copied exactly, with Tanzil’s notice kept at the top of each surah’s file in the app. The notice in full
  • English translation

Marmaduke Pickthall, The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (1930), via Tanzil

The English under each verse. It is on to begin with, and you can turn it off.

    Licence
The 1930 text is out of copyright. Tanzil’s terms for its translations ask for non‑commercial use, and Khalis is free, with no ads or payments.
    Changes
None. Tanzil’s note for this translation is kept with it: see below.

  • Tafsir al-Jalalayn

    Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, digitised by Quranpedia.net (book 272, from its data of 10 August 2026)

The classical commentary, in Arabic, opened verse by verse. Where one passage explains several verses, Khalis shows that passage for each of them.

    Licence
The Quranpedia data licence: free to use inside apps. It asks for no credit, though a link is appreciated, and here it is with thanks.

  • Tajweed colours

quran-tajweed by Collin Fair, from its file output/tajweed.hafs.uthmani-pause-sajdah.json

The colours on the Arabic. The data marks 18 tajweed rules; Khalis shows them in seven colours, with a key.

    Changed for Khalis

The 60,057 marked ranges were made against Tanzil’s text as it was in 2017. Tanzil now writes a few marks differently, so Khalis moves each range onto the current text: 4,601 of them shift where a hamza or a small high yeh is now written as two characters. Each moved range is checked to cover the same letters as before.

Only the data is used, not the project’s code.

  • Similar verses

Quran_Mutashabihat_Data by Waqar144, based on the work of the late Qari Idrees Al Asim

The mutashabihat: verses that are easily confused with one another, shown in Memorise mode. A memorisation aid, and, as its author notes, not an exhaustive list.

Recitation

Six reciters, credited by name

The recordings are not part of the app. They are streamed when you press play, or saved on your own phone when you download a surah.

  • Recitation audio

Islamic Network, verse-by-verse recordings from cdn.islamic.network

    • Mishary Alafasy
    • Mohamed Siddiq al-Minshawi
    • Abu Bakr ash-Shaatree
    • Hani ar-Rifai
    • Abdur-Rahman as-Sudais
    • Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary
    Terms
Islamic Network’s terms and conditions: free for non-commercial streaming and personal download, with the reciter credited. Reciters may ask for their recordings to be removed.
    Used in
  • Word-by-word timings

quran-align by Collin Fair, the release of 24 November 2016

Lights each word as it is recited, for the four reciters marked above, whose streamed recordings match the aligned files byte for byte. The As-Sudais file in that release is damaged, so it is not used.

    Changed for Khalis
Put into a compact form for the app, keeping only the timings that fall within each verse’s words.

Remembrance

Adhkar and duas, unchanged

Each hadith is shown as HadeethEnc publishes it, in Arabic and English, with its attribution and grade.

  • Adhkar and duas

HadeethEnc.com, the Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths

86 hadiths from its categories for morning and evening, sleep, prayer, home, mosque and bathroom, hard times, remembrance at any time and reported duas. Khalis sets them out in seven sections, each entry with its title, the English, the Arabic, the attribution and the grade.

    Terms
HadeethEnc allows its translations to be republished if they are not changed, the source is named, the version is given, and they are kept up to date.
    Version
Taken from HadeethEnc’s API, version 1, on 28 October 2026. The API gives no other version number.
    Changes
None. Each field is copied exactly as HadeethEnc gives it; nothing is shortened or edited.

The other adhan sound you can choose for each prayer, and for the night alarms.

Type

The letters on every screen

The app’s fonts are bundled with it, so nothing is fetched to show them.

  • Fonts

Aboreto, Figtree, Amiri and Amiri Quran, via Google Fonts

Aboreto for headings, Figtree in regular, medium and semibold for text, Amiri Quran for the verses of the Quran, and Amiri for the other Arabic, such as the adhkar.

What this site uses

The site is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Its prayer-time library, fonts and city list are copies of the app’s own, and the library and fonts keep their licences beside them.

  • Prayer times

Adhan by Batoul Apps, version 4.4.6, the same build the app uses

Works out the prayer times shown on these pages, in your browser.

  • City list

The app’s own list of 45 cities in 34 countries

Each city has its coordinates, its time zone and the calculation method the app picks there, the one most mosques there follow. It is copied from the app, so the site and the app agree.

  • Fonts

Aboreto, Figtree and Amiri Quran, the same font files as the app’s

Aboreto for headings, Figtree in regular, medium and semibold for text, and Amiri Quran for the Arabic.

    Licence

SIL Open Font Licence 1.1, with each font’s licence file beside it:

  • Screens and quotations

    Khalis itself

The pictures of the app are screens from Khalis, in its light theme. The verses and adhkar on these pages, and in those screens, come from the sources above through the app’s own data, and are credited where they appear.
